- I have created a special web site for Birkenhead Institute Grammar School, Wirral, with information, pictures, and a contact point for all former pupils and staff of the Birkenhead Institute, Wirral. The site contains several elements, including a pupils' memories site, the B.I. school magazine, "The Visor", the first Headmaster, Mr Connacher, and an early history site, "Whetsonian", named after the first B. I. school magazine. There are also two Flickr sites showing interesting pictures of Birkenhead Institute, as well as one of its famous pupils, Wilfred Owen, the renowned war poet. The Birkenhead Institute first opened on Wirral in 1889, and was founded by George Atkin. Its first Headmaster, William Connacher, helped to set the school on a sound basis, and the school continued to be a very successful educational establishment until its closure in 1994. During the life of the school, many famous pupils emerged, including Lord Cohen and Wilfred Owen. Wilfred Owen is probably the most famous pupil, having written some excellent poetry about the futility of war. Sadly, he was killed in World War One, just days before the end of the war. Birkenhead Institute was originally situated in Whetstone Lane, Wirral, but later moved to Tollemache Road, when it changed from being a Grammar School to a High School. However, most of its life was as a Grammar School. The original school in Whetstone Lane, Birkenhead, also consisted of a Junior School. The school had four "Houses", named after founders of the school, these being: Atkin, Stitt, Tate, and Westminster, and later Cohen and Davies houses were added. I hope that former pupils and staff will enjoy the web site I have created, and any pupils have items or photographs they wish to be added, please send them to the email address shown above, and I shall be pleased to add them to the site.
